1. What actually caused the brown spots to appear on fired pots?
2. Throughout the book, Crane-man teaches Tree-ear valuable lessons about life with his riddles, stories and wise-sayings. Choose one of these riddles, stories or wise-sayings that you find important to the story. Explain what the lesson story, riddle or saying that you are using from Crane-man.
3. The characters in A single Shard show a variety of characteristics Which character do you admire the most? Give reasons to support why you admire the character you chose.
ReplyDelete1. The cause of the brown spots was known as oxidation. This happens when too much air enters the kiln during the firing process. This will cause the pot to “rust” the iron in the glaze and cause the undesirable color.
2. The wise saying that I chose from Crane-man is “Scholars read the great words of the world. But you and I must learn to read the world itself.” This means that since Crane-man and Tree-ear can’t go to school and read books to learn, so instead they must learn from life experiences. This is important to the story because they’re poor, they live on their own, must find their own food, and take care of themselves.
3. The character that I admire most is Tree-ear for sticking up for his beliefs and dreams. His dream was to make a pot and he believed that he could do it, but Min thought he couldn’t because he was a poor boy. It also shows this about Min when he said I can’t teach you because you are not my son. Tree-ear was determined because he kept going back to Min’s house and offered to help with other responsibilities hoping he would eventually get to make a pot. His determination paid off because he did show Min that he was a hard worker and got to make a pot.

1. On page 150 it says, “The cause of the brown spots and impure glaze tint that ruined Min’s initial work for the royal emissary is now known to be oxidation. Because it contains iron, the celadon glaze acquires the desired finish only if fired in an atmosphere of reduced oxygen. Too much air entering the kiln during the firing process will “rust” the iron in the glaze and cause the undesirable color.”
ReplyDelete2. On page 115 one of Crane-man’s quotes states, “We are afraid of the things we do not know- just because we do not know them.” What this means to me is that when someone has not tried something they are afraid to take a risk because they are afraid they will not like it or that they might get hurt or they might not succeed. Trying something new helps you discover new pleasures.
3. I like Crane-man a lot because he is helpful and wise. Tree-ear reflects on what Crane-man’s wise sayings during his long journey to Songdo. The sayings guide him through his voyage. For example on page 107 Crane-man tells Tree-ear, “Of all the problems you may meet on your journey, it will be people who are the greatest danger. But it will be people to whom you must turn if ever you are in need of aid.” This was proved in the book when two robbers on the Rock of Falling Flowers attacked Tree-ear and broke both pots that he was taking to Songdo. Then on page 108 it said that Tree-ear walked home with a child he met in the village and the child’s mother provided Tree-ear with food and a place to sleep. These examples show that Crane-man was right. People can be both dangerous and helpful. 5-4-13 JS#15

ReplyDeleteWhat caused brown spots to show up on the fired pots is now called oxidation. This is because it contains iron, and the celadon glaze needs to have the proper amount of reduced oxygen.
On page 107, one of Crane-mans wise sayings was, “Of all the problems you may meet on your journey, it will be people who are the greatest danger. But it will also be people to whom you must turn if ever you are in need of aid.” This quote that Crane-man said is very important because it shows the difference between people in the world. That people can choose to be who they are. Good or Bad. Crane-man said this to warn Tree-ear about the people he will meet.
Out of all the characters in A Single Shard, I admire Crane-man the most. I think Crane-mans wise sayings are really important to the story because they have changed many of the other characters actions. The story without Crane-man would not have ended the same way.

ReplyDelete1. The cause of the brown spots to appear on fired pots was because the fired pots have iron, the celadon glaze acquires the desired finish only if fired in an atmosphere of reduced oxygen. Too much air entering the kiln during firing process will cause rust dots. Pg.150-151
2. I think “people will be your greatest danger, but they will also be there for you” is a very important wise saying. One example of how people are your greatest danger is when he gets robbed by a person. One example of people being there for you is that when Tree-ear has to go on his journey, Ajima feeds Crane-man. People are who you will be competing with and they are there for you when you need it. This is why I support this wise saying.
3. I admire Crane-man the most. I admire him because he took care of Tree-ear when he was young and throughout his life, he is always there for Tree-ear, and he provides him with valuable lessons about life. He is the wise character in the book and he acts like a parent to Tree-ear and he is very pleasurable. This is why I like Crane-man in A Single Shard.

ReplyDelete1. The brown spots that came out on some of the pottery were caused by what is known as oxidation. Celadon glaze contains iron and if too much oxygen is in the kiln the glaze gets the terrible brown color.
2. Crane-man once told Tree-Ear the story of the Rock of Falling Flower, and how the women who jumped had inspired people who needed courage. At the end of the story Crane-man said that leaping into death is not the only way to show true courage. My guess is that he meant showing courage doesn’t have to something big, it could something like helping a friend across the rocks through a small 3 inch deep river when you know you could fall.
3. I really admired Ajima because she was dependable and helpful. When Min did all his charcoal sketches Ajima erased the boards so they could be reused. Ajima also did all the house chores such as weeding and feeding the chickens. She always came to Tree-Ear with food on his workdays too. She was always there and ready to help anyone Min, Tree-Ear, or Crane-man.

ReplyDelete1. What caused the brown spots to appear on the celadon was known to be as oxidation. The pottery contained iron, so for the glaze to come out the way Min wished for it to, it had to be glazed in an atmosphere of little oxygen.
2. One saying from Crane-Man is the same wind that blows one door closed, often blows another open. I think this saying means that when something is going perfectly and it is ruined there’s always another opportunity or decision. An example of this is when Tree-Ear gets back to Ch’ulp’o from the journey that he was on with the great news that Min had gotten the commission, but the he finds out that Crane-Man is dead. The other opportunity for him is that he gets to go live with Ajima and Min.
3. One of the characters in a Single Shard that I admire the most is Crane-Man. I admire Crane-Man because he gives all of these wise statements and sayings and then they apply to the story or come true later. It seems like Crane-Man could see the future.
