Chapter 11:
1. How did Tree-ear feel when he reached the top of the Rock of Falling Flowers?
2. Why do you think Tree-ear take the shard of pottery to Songdo?
Chapter 12:
3. The roof of the palace astounded Tree-ear. Explain why?
4. What is the reaction of the various guards and servants to Tree-ear's request to see Emissary Kim? Why do they react this way?
5. How do the actions of Emissary Kim show that he is WISE and CONSIDERATE man?
Chapter 13:
6. How does Tree-ear deal with the death of Crane-man?
7. Why is Ajima giving Tree-ear a new name such a significant event?
1. Tree-ear felt great when he reached the top of the Rock of the Falling Flowers because he figured out what Crane-man’s wise words meant. His wise words were the story of the Rock of the Falling Flowers.
ReplyDelete2. Tree-ear took the shard of pottery to Songdo to show emissary Kim because the shard showed the best piece of the vase. The piece showed the inlay work and the vase’s melon shape.
3. The roof of the palace astounded Tree-ear because the roof had celadon roof tiles. Celadon is a special type of stoneware.
4. The reactions of the guards and servants were shocked and surprised. They react this way because Tree-ear was filthy and didn’t look like he was worthy of seeing a royal member.
5. The actions Emissary Kim show that he is a wise and considerate man because when Tree-ear only brought the shard of pottery to the Emissary he was disappointed but, Emissary Kim saw Min’s work in Ch’lup’o and knew how good his work was so that’s why the Emissary assigned Min the royal commission. Emissary Kim appreciated the detail in just the single shard.
6. Tree-ear dealt with the death of Crane-man by sleeping in Min’s house and being calm. When Tree-ear woke up the next day he was angry and threw rocks into the river under the bridge.
7. Ajima gave Tree-ear a new name of Hyung-pil. It was significant to Tree-ear because it shared their sons name and Tree-ear would no longer go by the name of an orphan. Hyung-pil was a person who donated many pieces of Korean celadon so it was an honor to have that name.

Chapter 11:
ReplyDelete1. Tree-ear was amazed when he got to the top of the Rock if Falling Flowers. Tree-ear felt that he was standing on the top of the world. He could not decide where to look first. To the north of Tree-ear was the Kum River which to him look like a stroke of silver ribboning its way through the hills and plains. Behind Tree-ear was the city of Puyo. It looked very small to Tree-ear. pg.120
2. I think that Tree-ear took the shard of pottery to Songdo because he at least had a piece of the pottery to show to the emissary. It would not be the same as showing the emissary a whole vessel but, it was part of the pot that was made by Min. It was better than nothing. Also I vet tree-ear was thinking that he made the long journey and he was going to let two robbers stop him just because they had broken the vessels. He still had something to show the emissary and it was what the emissary had wanted to see, pottery made by potter Min.pg.130
Chapter 12:
3. The roof of the palace astounded Tree-ear because it was made of celadon roof tiles. Tree-ear had heard of these tiles before. Before Tree-ear was born potters in Ch’ulp’o had been engaged in the very large job of making the very same tiles. “Wasters”, the rejects, could still be found around the kiln site. Tree-ear was so intrigued be those tiles that he wanted to climb on the roof of the palace to get a better look at the tiles.pg.135
4. The reactions of the servants and guards were shocked and surprised by Tree-ear’s appearance and order to be taken to emissary Kim. For example, on pg. 133, the author describes the look the guards was , “This scrawny scarecrow of a child claims a royal appointment?” Another example is that on page 134 servant of emissary Kim talks to Tree-ear about his request to see emissary Kim and denies every comment that Tree-ear makes that he should see emissary Kim. But in the end the servant lets Tree-ear see emissary Kim.
5. The actions of emissary Kim shows that he is a wise and considerate man is that he was disappointed that Tree-ear had not brought a pot from Min but, he did not through Tree-ear out like his servant tried to do. Emissary Kim stopped the servant from throwing Tree-ear out. Also on page 138 emissary Kim looks at Tree-ear with kindness in his eyes like Ajima’s, like Crane-man’s.
Chapter 13:
6. Tree-ear handled the news of Crane-man’s death by not crying when Min tells him how Crane-man died on pg. 143 and saying good-bye to Crane-man and crying on pg.144.
7. Ajima giving Tree-ear a new name be such a significant event because Hyung-pil shares a syllable with Min’s son’s name, Hyung-gu who died. It was an honor bestowed on siblings. Tree-ear was the name of a orphan. No longer would Tree-ear be called an orphan name.

ReplyDelete1. When Tree-Ear reached the top of the Rock of Falling Flowers he felt like he was on top of the world, the streets Puyo looked small and he thought he was high enough to see if the smudge on the horizon was the sea.
2. Tree-Ear thought it would be shameful if he did not show the work to the emissary but instead had to go back to Min and tell of his failure, which he felt he could not do. The vases had to reach Songdo, he had to do his part.
3. The palace roof was huge and it was made of perfectly made celadon tiles. Each one was fired correctly, and decorated intricately. If a tile was not perfectly made it was not used, so making many, many absolutely perfect ones was a huge task for the potters.
4. The guards at palace were skeptical of Tree-Ear’s claim to have an appointment with the emissary because he was a small, thin child. The man who led him to the to Emissary Kim was skeptical of him not only because he was a child, but because he had no pottery with him. The guards and servants had no idea who Tree-Ear was.
5. Emissary Kim proves he is a wise and considerate many in many chapters, including chapter 12. When Tree-Ear comes with just a shard, not a whole pot, the emissary considers how the shard looks, how it is fired without flaw to come out a perfect color, and a how well the inlay work was done. When he sees there is not pot he still looks at the one small piece. The emissary also doesn’t mind when Tree-Ear says Min takes so much time to make pottery, he actually says Min should work slowly so he pottery can be well done.
6. Tree-Ear is very upset about Crane-man, but he deals with it by not staying so sad but by trying to hope Crane-man is in a better place on two good legs.
7. Ajima giving Tree-Ear a new name is a meaningful event because it shows Tree-Ear is part of Min and Ajima’s family and that he will not be going back to the bridge to live there alone for the rest of his life after Crane-man is dead.

ReplyDelete1. Tree-Ear was amazed when he got to the top of the Rock of Falling Flowers. He was amazed because he could see everything from the top like the Kum River, and the city of Puyo. It‘s says that Tree-Ear felt like he was on top of the world.
2. Tree-Ear took the shard of pottery to Songdo because he was too ashamed to go back to Min with nothing. Also Tree-Ear might have gone to Songdo with the shard because he thought it showed Min’s best inlay work and glaze.
3. The roof of the palace amazed Tree-Ear because it was from tiles of celadon
4. When Tree-Ear asks to see Emissary Kim the guards were skeptical or incredulous of him because he was just a kid and probably looked dirty and scrawny.
5. The actions of Emissary Kim show that he is a wise and considerate man because he is patient with Tree-Ear. Also Emissary Kim’s aid tries to take Tree-Ear away he stops him and lets Tree-Ear show him the single shard.
6. When Crane-Man dies Tree-Ear was shocked because the news came to him so fast. He was very depressed. He thinks that it was his fault for his death because he went on the journey to Songdo, but if he didn’t go to Songdo he might have been there to do something.
7. Ajima gives Tree-Ear a new name because she and Min are adopting Tree-Ear and there last son was named Hyung-gu and Tree-Ear’s name is now Hyung-Pil.

ReplyDeleteI think that when Tree-ear reached the top of the rock of falling flowers he was feeling amazed by the courage of those people who jumped off the rock, also that the rock was pretty high off the ground. Also when the robbers threw the pots down to the shore of the ocean he was feeling like I should just give up and jump off as well, but he remembered what Crane-man had said “you don’t have jump of a rock to your death to show courage and to be brave.

I think that Tree-ear took the single shard to Songdo because he too thought that even a single shard of pottery could show his masters great skill. Also he felt that he had come all that way and he wasn’t going to give up just then. Just seeing the single shard gave him the hope that he could still make it.

I think that the roof was astounding to Tree-ear because the roof was very high. Also I think that Tree-ear thought that the roof extended very far.

The guards and servants of the emissary were acting very annoyed. I think that they were acting annoyed because there was a little kid claiming that he had a meeting with the royal emissary. He was annoyed because this little kid could be wasting his time and then when he found out he had a shard to show the royal emissary he was very angry.

Emissary Kim showed that he was wise and a considerate man when he saw that tree-ear only had a shard he did not send him away but he focused and looked to see what the shard was like. He saw that it showed all the structure and skill that Min puts into his work, and not many people would have been able to see that.

I think that Tree-ear handled Crane-man’s death very well he didn’t run away he stayed and held it together. He was very mature about his death and he held strong.

When Ajima gave Tree-ear a new name it was so big because it was like asking him to join their family. Also she really made Tree-ear happy. Also Tree-ear joining their family was like giving him a new life. CL12

ReplyDelete1. Tree-ear felt terrified when he first reached the top of the Rock of Falling Flowers. I think this because he could imagine the woman falling as if it was happening right in front of him. He got terrified just watching it.
2. I think Tree-ear took the shard of pottery to Songdo because that was all he had. If he hadn't brought the shard to Emissary Kim, he wouldn't have believed Tree-ear at all. At least he took something to show Kim.
3. In chapter 12, the roof of the palace astounded Tree-ear. It did because his social status is very poor. Tree-ear lives under a bridge, while the palace is a story high, and is made of celadon, pottery tiles.
4. The guards and servants reacted like he was tricking them into going into the palace. The guards were very strict in letting Tree-ear get to see Emissary Kim. They didn't think such a young boy would have an appointment with such an important person.
5. Emissary Kim's actions showed that he is a wise and considerate man. For example, when Kim saw the shard he didn't automatically refuse, instead he was wise took a good look at it first. Kim was considerate when he didn't only take the shard as his decision he also took the pottery Min made in Ch'ulp'o.
6. When Tree-ear finds out about Crane-mans death, he is speechless at first but then bursts into tears. He has always looked up to Crane-man and a life without Crane-man is hard to think of. Tree-ear gets over the fact that Crane-man has died pretty early.
7. When Tree-ear gets adopted by Min and Ajima, Ajima gives Tree-ear a new name, Hyung-pil. This name is close to their sons name. This is such a big event because it shows how much Ajima cares about him. It also shows that Tree-ear is brought into the family with love.

1. Tree-ear felt like he was standing on the top of the world alone. Everything he looked at, it was so tiny. Pg.120-121
2. Tree-ear wanted to give the shard because it was the only shard that didn’t break when the burglars broke all the vases and it was the biggest piece available.
3. Tree-ear was amazed at the roof palace because he had never seen a celadon roof before. He also knew that the tiles were made in Ch'ulp'o.
4. The reaction of them to Tree-ear's request was at first annoyed because they wanted Tree-ear to give him the pottery and show the emissary, but he said he would only discuss where it is with emissary Kim. The reason they reacted this way is they looked at him like an orphan and looked down upon him.
5. When Tree-ear comes in to emissary Kim, Kim shows that he is wise and considerate even though Tree-ear had no backpack or anything to carry the pottery that he was expecting; he waited and listened to Tree-ear before shunning him off. That is how he received the single shard and gave Min the commission.
6. At first, Tree-ear froze in shock. He was devastated. Then he got angry and started throwing rocks into the stream vigorously. He cried after that because he lost his best friend and then Ajima comes and says to Tree-ear that he can stay at their house for the night.
7. This is an important date because Tree-ear’s new name, Hyung-pil, is so significant because their sons name was related to that and Ajima gave that name to tree-ear and they adopted him.
