Chapter 3:
1. Tree-ear said it would be more helpful to him if Crane-man stayed home and prepared the evening meal. Why do you think he said this? What character trait is Tree-ear displaying?
2. Tree-ear works for Min to repay him for the broken box. Why do you think he offered to work to pay off the debt of the box? In other words, if he runs away it is not very likely that the older Min would be able to catch him.
Chapter 4:
3. Crane-man said that Tree-ear was aptly named? (his name fits him) What did he mean by this statement?
4. Min does not produce as many finished pieces of pottery as other potters. Give TWO reasons why?
Chapter 5:
5. Tree-ear overcame his guilt about giving Crane-man the warm jacket by saying that since it was a gift given to him, he was free to do what he wished with it. Do you agree or disagree with his reasoning for giving away the jacket that Min's wife gave to him?
6. Should Tree-ear have spied on Kang? What do you think he will do with this knowledge?
1. Tree-ear didn’t think that Crane-man would be helpful with the wood. Instead of telling him that he was thoughtful when he said it would help more if Crane-man stayed home while Tree-ear was working and made we dinner. Tree-ear didn’t want to hurt Crane-man’s feelings.
ReplyDelete2. Tree-ear works for Min because he wants to learn how to make the pottery and shape the clay. Also Tree-ear knew that he would never have another opportunity to do this because he is poor. Tree-ear could also make money from making pottery one day.
3. Tree-ear was aptly named because none of the villagers would notice him as Min’s assistant but Tree-ear could hear everything. This means that Tree-ear has the ears of a scrawny little tree noticed by none but hearing all.
4. Min doesn’t produce as many finished pieces of pottery as the other potters because he takes his time in his work and he is a perfeconist.
5. I agree with this because I think Tree-ear was being caring when he gave the jaket to Crane-man. I think this because Crane-man makes dinner for himself and Tree-ear every night so Tree-ear could of gave the jacket to Crane-man to pay back all the times Crane-man made dinner.
6. I think that Tree-ear will tell Min what he saw Kang doing and maybe Min will make a piece of pottery like Kang’s to get into the palace for the potters commission if he doesn’t make it this time.

I think that Tree-ear said this because he knew that Crane-man would not be able to do the work that Tree-ear was doing, also if Crane-man wasn’t there to make supper then they wouldn’t have any food to eat. The character traits that Tree-ear showed were consideration because he was thinking about Crane-man and looking out for him so he wouldn’t hurt himself trying to do the things that Tree-ear did with his bad leg. The other character trait that Tree-ear showed was anticipation because he imagined and considered what might happen if Crane-man came, where he came to the conclusion no, because no one would be there to make supper.
ReplyDeleteI think that he chose to help work to pay off the box that he broke instead of running because he had a love for pottery and wanted to do what he dreamed of doing, making his own pot. Though, he did not know he wouldn’t even pick up clay. He had watched the master potter for a very long time and became inspired and a new love for pottery grew inside of him. He longed to just make a pot, just one pot.
I think when Crane-man said that Tree-ear was aptly named he meant that Tree-ear was named Tree-ear because the name fits him. It fits him because it says that his ears were like the big mushrooms that grew on trees.
Min does not make as many pots as other potters do because he takes longer. He takes longer because he is a perfectionist and he wants his pots to be as perfect as they could be. Another reason he does not make as many pots as other potters do is because he takes his time so he can have every detail as precise as they can get and he rejects a lot of pots that he has started because he believes they can be better.
I think he did the right thing when he gave away the jacket to Crane-man because he had already gotten new pants too. Also Crane-man was very cold and what he did was nice and kind. Another reason I think it was the right thing to do is because Min’s wife had given the jacket to Tree-ear and had given intending for it to keep someone warm which by giving it to Crane-man it was still doing just that.
In my opinion I think that Tree-ear should not have spied on Kang. I think this because if Kang was doing this so secretly it was probably supposed to be a secret. Also with this knowledge he could ruin Kang’s original idea. I think that Tree-ear will make a mistake and spill Kang’s new way of pottery. CL12
1. Tree-Ear said it would be better if Crane-Man stayed to make his evening meal because he didn’t want Crane-Man to come with him. He probably wanted to go alone so that Crane-Man didn’t try to chop the wood to spare Tree-Ear’s blistered hand, and Crane-Man might hurt himself because he is older and not as strong as Tree-Ear. A character trait Tree-Ear is showing is that he’s being secretive.
ReplyDelete2. Tree-Ear asked to repay Min for the broken box because he was shameful, and he wanted to learn how to make pots. I can tell Tree-Ear was shameful because it says on page 18 “Tree-Ear stood slowly, shame hot in his breast.” I can tell he wants to learn to make pots because when his nine days of paying Min back in work are done, he wants to work for him more.
3. Crane-Man thinks that Tree-Ear was aptly named because of Tree-Ear’s ears. On page 45, Crane-Man says “Tree-Ear! Again you see the aptness of your name. You are like the ears of a scrawny little tree, noticed by none but hearing all!” this shows that he thinks Tree-Ear was aptly named.
4. Min produces less pottery than other potters because Min makes sure it is beautiful, and he is a perfectionest. I can tell because on page 46, it says that Min’s work is renowned for its great beauty. It also says on the same page that Min used to very successful, but that his insistence on perfection had lost him “many a well paid commission.
5. I agree with Tree-Ear’s reasoning about giving the jacket to Crane-Man. I do because if you get a gift, it is for you to decide what happens to it. You have complete ownership of something once you receive it. Anyway, I don’t think that Min’s wife would mind if she found out Tree-Ear gave the jacket to Crane-Man.
6. I think Tree-Ear did the right thing when he spied on Kang. I do because it helped him find out what he should expect when the man who would decide who’d get the royal commission came. I think that he should tell Min about what Kang did so that Min can try doing it also, and because Min’s pots are so nice and he is a better potter, he might even be able to make it look even better.

ReplyDelete1. In my opinion, Tree-Ear said this because Crane-man can only use one leg and Tree-Ear would have to take care of him as they went somewhere and if Crane-man just stayed home to cook Tree-Ear would not have to deal with that. Crane-man might also be embarrassed if he fell and he could hurt himself. Tree-Ear is displaying understanding because he knows Crane-man can’t really walk but wants to make him feel as if he is doing something.
2.Tree-Ear stayed and offered to work for Min to repay him for the box because Crane-man said “work gives a man dignity, stealing takes it away”, Tree-Ear could not just run away, he had to work because he broke one of Min’s pieces of pottery.
3.Crane-man meant that Tree-Ear heard so much like the ears of a scrawny tree., so his name fit him well and in a way described him.
4. One reason Min makes such small amounts of pottery is because he is a perfectionist, he tries many times before he is happy with a piece of pottery and he has Tree-Ear stir, sieve, settle, and bail the clay many times before he’s satisfied with they way it is. Another reason Min produces so many less pieces than other potters is because he is growing older and can’t work as fast as younger potters can.
5. I disagree with what Tree-Ear did. The potter’s wife gave him the jacket so he would not be cold while he worked for Min. If she saw him without the jacket she went to the trouble to give him she might be upset.
6. In my opinion, Tree-Ear should not have spied on Kang because Kang should have gotten his privacy. He clearly wanted it, putting his pieces at the edge of the village kiln and working early in the morning and late at night. I predict Tree-Ear will give this knowledge to Min because he might think Min will be nicer to him and maybe let him try to make a pot.

In chapter 3, Tree-ear said that it would be more helpful to him if Crane-man stayed home and prepared the evening meal. I think this because it would be easier for Tree-ear to just work for Min than to also prepare for their evening meal. Tree-ear is showing that his is very organized. I think this because Tree-ear has to take care of Crane-man, because it is the winter. Tree-ear says this because working for Min is very hard work an he would love to come home to an already cooked evening meal.
ReplyDeleteTree-ear’s dream had always been to do pottery. When Tree-ear broke Min’s pot, and asked to work for him to repay it, this was his only chance to do pottery. Everyday Tree-ear tries to get Min to teach him how to do pottery. Working for Min might be the only way for Tree-ear to catch his dream.
In chapter 4, Crane-man said that Tree-ear’s name fit him very well. On page 45, Tree-ear stops by almost every house in the village, and listens to other peoples conversations. He then comes home and tells Crane-man about the information he heard. Crane-man thinks his name fits him because he is like the ears of a small tree. He hears everything, but is never noticed by anyone.
Min doesn’t produce as many finished pieces of pottery as the other potters. One reason is because Min never rushes when he makes his pottery. Mins work is very slow, but they are perfect. Another reason Min doesn’t produce as many pieces of pottery is because he is slow at selling his pottery, he must bring them to a higher price. Sense his pottery is so valuable, he has less of them to sell.
Tree-ear overcame his guilt about giving Crane-man the warm jacket that was given as a gift to him from Min’s wife. I agree that Tree-ear should have given Crane-man his jacket. I think this because Crane-man doesn’t do very well in the cold. Tree-ears jacket would help Crane-man a lot more then himself.
I don’t think Tree-ear should have spied on Kang. I think this because Kang and Min do their pottery differently, and if Tree-ear starts to like Kang’s work he might forget about the way Min works. This might hurt his knowledge about the way Min works.

ReplyDelete1. I think Tree Ear told Crane Man that it would be more helpful for him to stay home and prepare the evening meal because he knew that Crane Man was too old to go chop wood for Min. Also, Tree Ear knew that there was no way he could help with his bad leg. The character trait that Tree Ear was showing was thoughtfulness.
2. I think Tree Ear offers to work for Min because in the village that they live in the potters are on the top of the social class so they are the most respected, so for Tree Ear to run off without repaying Min for the broken box would be wrong. I also think Tree Ear offered to work for Min because Tree Ear really wanted to become a potter and by working for Min he would learn how to make ceramics.
3. When Crane Man said that Tree Ear was aptly named he meant that Tree Ear hears everything when he wanders around from garbage heap to garbage heap. The quote from the book says “You are like the ears of a scrawny little tree, noticed by none but hearing all!”
4. Min does not finish as many pots as other potters because he is a perfectionist and wants all of his pieces to be beautiful. Another reason that Min doesn’t produce as many pots as other potters is because he works more carefully and makes sure everything is precise.
5. I agree with Tree Ear for giving Crane Man the jacket because Crane Man was in more need for the jacket since he was sitting in the cold with one thin layer of clothing while Tree Ear had the jacket and pants that Min’s wife gave him. Also Tree Ear couldn’t just let Crane Man sit there freezing while he was nice and warm in the thick coat and pants.
6. I think Tree Ear shouldn’t have spied on Kang. I think this because Tree Ear could tell Min what he saw and then Min could use the method that Kang was using to impress the royal emissary to get the job as the pottery commission.
1. Tree-ear said it would be more helpful if Crane-Man stayed to make his
ReplyDeleteevening meal. In my opinion, I think Tree-ear did this because he didn’t want Crane-Man to come with him. He probably wanted to go by himself so that Crane-Man doesn’t try to chop the wood to. Also Crane-Man might hurt himself because he is older and weak. This is showing that Tree-ear is being caring.
2. Tree-ear works for Min. Tree-ear’s dream had always been to create
pottery. He does this because he wants to learn how to make the pottery and shape the clay. When Tree-ear broke Min’s box, he asked to work for him to repay it. This was his only chance to do pottery. Also Tree-ear realized that he would never make pottery after he finished with Min because he is poor.

Tree-ear hears everything when he scavenges from garbage pile to garbage pile. There is a quote about his ears: “You are like the ears of a scrawny little tree, noticed by none but hearing all!”
4. Min doesn’t finish as many pots as other potters because he wants his
pieces to be beautiful so they will come back to him. He takes his time and if he makes a mistake, he starts all over. He is a perfectionist when it comes to pottery.
5. I agree with his reasoning. I agree with him because it is now
Tree-ear’s jacket. He can do anything with it because it is his. Imagine you get a tee shirt for Christmas. In 2 years, you outgrow the tee shirt. You have the choice what you can do with it: keep it, throw it out, or donate it.
Tree-ear decided to give it to Crane-man.
6. In my opinion, I think Tree-ear will tell min about Kang’s creation. I
also think if this does happen, Min will know what he is competing with so given that, I think Min is going to create a better pot than Kang’s.
