Chapter 9:
1. How had the tradition of the sons of potters learning the skills and becoming potters themselves developed?
2. Why did Crane-man refuse Ajima's offer of food each day that Tree-ear was away? How to Tree-ear convince Crane-man to accept Ajima's offer?
3. What did Crane-man mean when he said..."the same wind that blows one door shut often blows another open." p. 97

1. On page 64, Crane-man says that if an idea is being kept secret, and it is taken by trickery or stealth, and then used, it is the same thing as stealing. Comment on his statement. Do you agree or disagree with Crane-man?
2. Are there times or occasions when secret ideas should be revealed or uncovered? Give a REAL-LIFE example.
3. The firing of pottery in the 1200's was extremely difficult. Why was it so difficult?
4. The distance of the journey that Tree-ear had to take scared him. What advice did Crane-man give Tree-ear to help him overcome his fear?

1. Tree-ear said it would be more helpful to him if Crane-man stayed home and prepared the evening meal. Why do you think he said this? What character trait is Tree-ear displaying?
2. Tree-ear works for Min to repay him for the broken box. Why do you think he offered to work to pay off the debt of the box? In other words, if he runs away it is not very likely that the older Min would be able to catch him.

4. Min does not produce as many finished pieces of pottery as other potters. Give TWO reasons why?
